Welcome to our new website! What was formerly the Payton City Wide Math Circle has been renamed the Math Circles of Chicago. This change reflects the growth of our organization, and our stated mission:
The Math Circles of Chicago seek to provide 5th to 12th graders in all communities of Chicago with opportunities to actively participate in doing novel mathematics in order to increase their mathematical power and to promote a lifelong love of mathematics.
We have now expanded to four sites around the city: Payton, Bridgeport, Lane Tech, and our newest site in Pilsen! Over the upcoming years we plan to increase the number of locations until we meet our mission. (South siders note: we may be expanding this year to include a site at the University of Chicago; we hope to make an announcement regarding this very soon!)
Registration for our circles will begin the week of September 8th, when school begins. Many of our programs have more applicants than spaces; in this case we will run a ‘lottery’ to determine who is admitted and who will be put on a wait list.
This transition also marks my appointment as the Executive Director of the Math Circles of Chicago. Previously I’ve served as an urban educator (17 years as Chicago Public School mathematics teacher) and as an urban teacher educator (6 years as the Director of the Secondary Math and Science component at the University of Chicago’s Urban Teacher Education Program). My goals for MC^2 are to increase the capacity of the organization to serve more children in Chicago, and to continually improve the quality of our programming.
I look forward to working with students, teachers and parents. You will see me regularly whenever our math circles gather. Welcome!
Doug O’Roark
