Many children fear math, that is no secret. Part of the fear stems from thinking there is only one way to do math. But not all students learn the same way. Our program goes beyond math tutoring to help students face their math problems at the source. Learning a new skill, physical or mental, requires supports that help students learn to trust themselves and have confidence in their ability to learn, understand, and execute math concepts. Math Circles provides these supports by:
- Centering student autonomy.
We believe students should be able to choose what questions spark their curiosities and encourage them to explore those ideas further. All children are capable of learning and doing mathematics, and that we all have so much to learn from each other.
- Nurturing student joy.
We believe in having fun especially in mathematics spaces that have been reduced to too much screen time, too much testing, and too much pressure on children. If a student is having a hard time grasping a concept, they are free to walk away and come back to the problem in their own time with the encouragement and aid of their Math Circles community.
- Prioritizing student care.
We believe that students have a right to explore mathematics in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment that sees each Math Circle community member as a friend and someone to learn with and from.
After their Math Circles experience 82% of our students report that they are more interested in math.
